Fuel injector testing and cleaning is often over-looked as a solution to engine problems and / or performance tuning. Engine problems do not always manifest themselves as an obvious misfire or poor running. You may say "I´ve never had a problem with an injector", but how would you know?
Testing your injectors will provide you with the answer. Often one injector will be partially blocked, the symptoms of which are not always what you might imagine. Testing and cleaning injectors allows you to balance the performance of a set of injectors, in order to get maximum power and maximum fuel efficiency from your engine. Here at Jebs we´ve seen gains of several hp, simply from cleaning and balancing the fuel injectors.
Many people clean fuel injectors using a cleaning fluid (or petrol) and an air line, trying to blow away the dirt. This may work for large particles easily visible to the naked eye, but fuel injector nozzles are very small, and it´s often not possible to see the blockage.
The usual "solution" to resolve problems with fuel injection systems is to make electronic adjustments (i.e. changing the fuel map using software). Unfortunately this generally affects all injectors simultaneously and will therefore cause more problems than it solves. At best, this will result in a poorly running bike, a dissatisfied customer (you) and hours of wasted workshop time. At worst, expect a damaged engine or catalyst and a large bill. And the problem is still there!
When we test the injectors, we analyse their performance and see how defects affect their performance. It´s not only high-mileage bikes which are affected - as with carburettors, injectors are also susceptible to fuel going off during periods of non-use leaving deposits in the injector. Contamination and/or corrosion can reduce fuel flow or restrict the injector valve causing over fuelling. The spray pattern, atomization and the amount of fuel delivered can all be affected.
In the picture to the right, only injectors 1 and 5 are working correctly.
Jebs´ Fuel Injector Tester tests and measures the injectors´ droplet formation, atomization, efficiency and fuel delivery. All are visually and / or physically checked and tested as a starting point, rather than as a last resort. When problems are found, the injectors are cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning bath. The injectors are then connected to the tester in order to operate them at high frequency during cleaning. After cleaning, the rubber sealing rings, plastic protection caps and filter baskets can be replaced (as applicable) before re-testing to ensure all the injectors are performing as a perfectly matched, balanced set.
Jebs Performance Engineering offer the complete injector testing, cleaning and balancing service, for all types of fuel injection systems from cars and bikes, to jetskis and boats. Our injector cleaning service includes:
For performance tuning, we can also perform dyno runs to compare power output before and after injector cleaning.
Injector servicing is necessary, it works and is approved worldwide by Bosch and Delphi. Contact us for more information on injector cleaning.
